The heart of our beloved devices is undoubtedly the SoC, the piece of silicon that integrates processor, GPU, memory controller, network modem and countless other circuits critical to the operation of smartphones and tablets. Today finally know the frequencies of Snapdragon 810, the chip that will mark the immediate future of the mobile world!
Those who have followed the development of that market, in fact, knows that the manufacturer of reference for SoC is the American Qualcomm, which managed some time to excel both sales volumes and performance. The workhorse of this company is just the Snapdragon series; they belong to the majority of the chips that power the popular flagship Android phone.
The next top range of this series, as we know already from April, will Snapdragon 810, first SoC octacore Big.little 64bit company. It is a big leap for the company that was forced to arrive in time on the market, to abandon temporarily his proprietary architecture Krait (why quad core Snapdragon 800 has superior performance chip octacore as MT6592) in favor of core developed directly from ARM.
Snapdragon 810, therefore, will rely on four cores “little” A53 operating at 1555 MHz (1:56 GHz) and four A57 high performance 1958 MHz (1.96 GHz). As a comparison, we recall that the current diamond tip of the series, Snapdragon 805, operates at a frequency of 2.65 GHz, considerably higher. Given the difference in the production process, which goes from 28 nm lithography used to this day to that at 20 nm, we would have expected more.
The overall performance, in any case, should be higher than what has been seen by the use of the instructions ARMv8-A, a significant upgrade compared to the ISA ARMv7-A which is common to all processors 32-bit ARM. This result, however, depend mainly on a correct software implementation.
Innovations, of course, do not stop the processor, but also cover all other components. Native support for LTE-advanced, the excellent GPU Adreno 430, the possibility of using 4K screens, increased memory bandwidth and all the other small but important improvements also make us think that Snapdragon 810 will be the point of market reference for most of the next year.
Recall that, in spite of the first devices with this SoC have already been submitted, shipments to third-party manufacturers by Qualcomm are planned from the beginning of 2015. We will, therefore, wait another few months before we see the first Chinese terminals equipped with this chip.
